Sometimes, the things that leave us feeling unsettled slip in quietly. It could be a date in the calendar that you know will weigh on your mind, a conversation you're putting off, or a subtle change you can't quite put your finger on.
Before we know it, everything feels unsettled.
In our house, it's exam season, and the house feels different — calm as we make more effort to keep things quiet, inevitably a little bit tense at times.
Maybe you're also thinking about what's next for your children — new schools, big decisions, or the thought of them leaving home.
Maybe life has brought something heavier, like a diagnosis, a change you didn't choose or the slow, steady responsibility of caring for someone you love.
Or maybe it's not one big thing at all. Just a handful of small changes that leave you feeling a little off balance.
However it shows up, these moments can leave you feeling stretched thin — in your heart, in your mind, and sometimes in your body as well.
And often, right in the middle of everything, we find ourselves holding things together.
A gentle reminder
When life feels like this, it's easy to slip to the bottom of the list. We keep going, organising and looking after everyone around us. But we matter here too — not loudly or demanding attention but in a steady, quiet way.
The kind that says:
You're allowed to pause, even briefly. If you feel guilty for caring for yourself, remember: this is normal. Tending to yourself gives you the strength you need to support those you love.
Tip: If it feels hard to pause, try this: place a hand gently over your heart and take a slow, deep breath. As you breathe out, offer yourself a quiet phrase, such as "It's okay to take care of myself" or "I am doing my best." Let this small act remind you of your own kindness.
Finding small, calming rituals in your day
Small, steady anchors help the most. Try connecting care to your daily routine: pause after brushing your teeth or notice the weight of your feet on the floor while waiting for the kettle to boil. Linking care to existing habits makes it easier to fit into busy days.
Little moments that help you return to yourself....
- A cup of tea before the house wakes up
- A breath of fresh air between tasks
- Stepping outside for a few quiet minutes
- Letting your shoulders drop, even briefly
- Taking a deep breath while washing your hands
- Thinking a kind thought about yourself as you pass a mirror
You could even use your skincare routine as an anchor. I'm not saying it's a solution to everything that's going on, because it isn't. But it's a small moment that's just for you.
A simple skincare ritual to help you pause
Think of your skincare ritual as a way to care for your skin, yes. But also to soften the edges of your day......
-
A pause at the end of the day, a moment away from the noise, the to-do lists, the constant thinking. It's a chance to catch your breath.
-
Instead of rushing through our routines on autopilot, this is an invitation to slow down and awaken our senses — to notice the silky texture of your cleansing balm as it melts into your skin, to really feel our skin beneath our fingertips.
-
The simple act of massaging the face helps to boost circulation, supporting the skin so it looks and feels more alive. Gentle, upward movements can encourage lymphatic drainage too, helping to ease tension you might not even realise you're holding.
-
As you take a few slow, steady breaths, inhaling the soft, natural scent of the oils. Your body will begin to soften, your shoulders drop and your jaw unclenches. Your nervous system starts to settle.
It's not about doing more. It's about doing things differently. A few quiet minutes that are yours to nourish your skin and nurture yourself.
With a simple, thoughtfully crafted routine, it doesn't need to be complicated to feel good or to work.

A small question for you
I've been thinking about this myself lately, and I'd love to hear what helps you in these moments. When life feels a little unsettled, what small rituals or strategies bring you back to yourself?
