If you've ever picked up a facial oil and wondered exactly where it fits in your routine, you're asking the right question. It's one of the things I often hear, and the answer surprises a lot of people.
Most of us have been told to mix oil into moisturiser, or apply it first as a "base." It feels intuitive. Oil feels rich and nourishing, so surely it goes on early, right?
It’s a really common way to think about it, but there’s a slightly different way that tends to work better. That's the reason the Pamoja ritual ends with a facial oil, and once you understand the logic, it changes the way you think about layering altogether.
Why Order Matters More Than You Think
Skincare layering isn't really about preference. It's about how ingredients actually behave on skin.
The general principle is simple: lighter, water-based products need to reach the skin first. Heavier, oil-based products go last. It’s less about style or preference and more about how these ingredients behave on the skin.
Water-based formulas can't penetrate through an oil layer. If you apply oil early, it can make it harder for anything applied afterwards to properly absorb.
Think of it like this. You wouldn't put a raincoat on before getting dressed. The coat is meant to protect what's underneath - but only if it goes on last!
The Thinking Behind the Pamoja Ritual
The ritual is ordered with intention. Each step has a specific role, and the sequence matters.
You start with the Reset Cleansing Balm to gently remove the day without stripping your skin's natural barrier. Next comes the Replenish Hydrating Serum, with ectoin and hyaluronic acid to draw moisture deep into the skin and leave it feeling plumper and more comfortable. Then the Revive Multi-Action Face Cream, delivering your daily moisture and giving everything a chance to settle.
By step three, your skin has been cleansed, hydrated, and moisturised. At this point, your skin has everything it needs.
Then, last of all: the facial oil.
Why the Oil Goes Last
The Pamoja facial oil is 100% natural and oil-based, which means it behaves as an occlusive layer. Occlusive is a skincare term worth knowing - it simply means something that forms a protective seal over the skin's surface.
Applied as the final step, the oil locks in everything underneath. The hydration from your serum and moisturiser stays where it belongs (in your skin) rather than slowly evaporating throughout the night. This is what's known as transepidermal water loss, or TEWL - essentially, moisture gradually escaping from the skin. Reducing TEWL is one of the most effective things you can do for dry or dehydrated skin. This becomes especially important as skin changes during perimenopause and menopause, when it tends to lose moisture more easily.
It's why so many customers notice a difference by morning when they use the Restore Radiance Booster as the final step. The oil has been doing its work overnight, protecting and preserving the layers beneath it.
"I put it on before bed and when I wake up the next day my skin looks amazing! I absolutely swear by it." Briony S.
A Note on Morning Routines
The oil-last approach is most powerful as part of an evening routine. If you're using a facial oil in the morning, it's worth knowing that applying it before SPF can interfere with how well your sunscreen adheres and performs. In the morning, it’s often simplest to skip oil altogether, or use a very small amount once your SPF has fully settled, just keeping in mind that sunscreen works best when it can sit evenly on the skin.
For most people, the evening ritual is where the facial oil really works best.
The Simple Rule to Remember
Water-based products first. Oil-based products last. Let each layer absorb slightly before adding the next.
That's it! There's no need for guesswork or complicated charts. When you understand the principle, the ritual stops feeling like a set of instructions and starts feeling like something that makes sense.
That was always the intention with Pamoja - a routine you can trust, in an order that works. A little daily kindness for skin that deserves the same care you give everything else.
